Stella PayStella Pay
VisaVirtual and plasticSince 2024A Visa credit card whose limit is not underwritten but collateralised — it arrives with a spending limit of zero and rises only as you deposit USDC, USDT, BTC or ETH — sold by a company that publishes no price for anything until you have installed the app.
The issuer does not publish enough of its charges for us to price this card. That is not the same as cheap.
Whether to take Stella Pay
Hard to recommend and easy to describe: the product is real, the collateral model is unusual and the card does come in plastic with ATM access, but you cannot find out what any of it costs without installing the app and passing identity checks — and the disclosure has got worse over time, not better, as the help centre went behind a login. Add to that an unnamed issuing bank, a zero starting limit that surprises new users, and five thousand downloads after two years.
In its favour
- Four assets collateralise the card — USDC, USDT, BTC and ETH — rather than stablecoins only
- Both a physical and a virtual card, with global ATM access and instant transfers between the two
- Google Pay support and acceptance at over 40 million Visa merchants
- Crypto withdrawals back out are supported, with fees the site describes as being as low as $1 — which, unusually for this tier, means money is not one-way
Against it
- You cannot learn a single price before signing up. There is no public fee schedule at all: Stella Pay states that fee and limit information "can be found in the Stella Pay App", so issuance, top-up, conversion, ATM and every limit are unavailable to anyone comparing cards
- The card starts with a credit limit of zero. It is a Visa credit card by BIN, but a new user who passes KYC and receives a card can spend nothing until they deposit collateral — the limit rises with deposits, not with underwriting
- The help centre used to be public and is now login-gated. Articles that once published the annual fee, the ATM limits and the deposit fees are no longer reachable, so the price disclosure has moved backwards over time
- The issuing bank is never named — the terms refer only to an unnamed partner issuer
Also true, in its favour
- Multi-network support for deposits and withdrawals
What Stella Pay costs
Stella Pay publishes no fee schedule at all — not one of these charges is named on stellapay.io. That is why this record carries no price: the ledger says so rather than estimating one.
Not published by the issuer: to issue the card, monthly, to load, to spend, per payment, fixed, to spend outside the dollar, at a cash machine.
Nothing is published. Stella Pay states that information about fees and limits, including ATM withdrawals, exchange rates and top-ups, is found inside the app, and the help-centre articles that once carried the annual fee and the ATM limits are now behind a login. So issuance, top-up, conversion, the per-payment charge, the ATM fee and every limit are all blank here, and that is the published state of the world rather than a gap in the checking. Two things are stated: crypto withdrawals back out are supported with fees described as being as low as $1, and the card's spending limit begins at zero and rises only with deposited collateral.
KYC: what Stella Pay asks for
A government document. Passport or ID goes to the issuer and to whoever processes verification for it, before the card is handed over.
Limits on spending
Stella Pay publishes no spending limits at all.
Where it works
The issuer names no country it turns away. That is not a promise that every country works.
The other flaws
- Custodial and uninsured: the app wallet is explicitly not a depository account and earns no interest
- The terms disclaim liability for unauthorised transactions outright
- "Free ATM withdrawals" is not a price statement — it appears only as a category label inside a parenthetical list of topics the app covers
- The jurisdiction is ambiguous: the X profile says Singapore while the user agreement names a different incorporation
- The two app stores describe two different products, one of them a corporate card
- Negligible scale after two years: 5,000+ downloads on Google Play and single-digit ratings on the US App Store
