Swissquote Debit Mastercard

Swissquote Debit Mastercard

MastercardVirtual and plasticSince 2023
Asks for everythingOperational

A debit Mastercard from a FINMA-supervised Swiss bank that settles purchases directly out of your BTC, ETH or XRP at the moment you pay — the only card here whose issuer is a listed bank rather than a fintech, and the only one that charges you custody for holding the crypto that funds it.

Total, per $100 spent: not published

The issuer does not publish enough of its charges for us to price this card. That is not the same as cheap.

Whether to take Swissquote Debit Mastercard

Worth it if counterparty risk is what you actually care about: this is a FINMA-supervised bank with a listed parent, and no fintech in this catalogue comes close on that axis. Not worth it as a cheap crypto card. The Swiss entity publishes no price for the crypto conversion that is the whole point of the product, reserves the right to pick the rate, charges quarterly custody on the coins that fund it, whitelists only six venues for deposits, and caps the free tier at CHF 10,000 a month.

In its favour

  • The issuer is a licensed Swiss bank supervised by FINMA, whose parent is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange — the strongest counterparty of any card in this catalogue
  • The entry tier is genuinely free: no issuance fee and no monthly fee on Light
  • Crypto payments settle out of your BTC, ETH or XRP position at the moment of the transaction, rather than requiring a pre-load
  • A real bank account with an IBAN in a long list of currencies sits behind the card

Against it

  • You cannot price a crypto payment before you make it. The general terms let Swissquote apply an exchange rate it deems appropriate, and weekend conversions use a provisional rate corrected afterwards with no stated bound
  • The crypto feature overrides your cash: with it enabled, the bank may sell your coins even when you hold enough of the settlement currency
  • You cannot deposit crypto from just anywhere. Only six venues are whitelisted for incoming transfers — Bitpanda, Bitstamp, Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken and Revolut — or a wallet whose key you control
  • Sending crypto out to an exchange is not supported and can destroy it, per the bank's own FAQ

Also true, in its favour

  • The fee schedule is a published pricing table plus a general-terms PDF, both dated and both complete enough to argue with
  • Currency conversion is a stated 1.5%, and the Elite tier converts up to CHF 5,000 a month free
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay, plastic as well as virtual, and real ATM access with published caps

Three tiers. Light is free, virtual only, and caps card spending at CHF 10,000 a month with CHF 5,000 a month at cash machines; it charges CHF 1.90 per withdrawal in Switzerland and CHF 4.90 abroad, and 0.95% to convert into any supported currency. Bright is CHF 6.90 a month after six free months and brings plastic plus five free Swiss withdrawals a month; replacement plastic is CHF 5, or CHF 50 on Elite. Currency conversion is 1.5%, with Elite converting up to CHF 5,000 a month free — a benefit that is capped and suspended at weekends. The crypto leg is where the real uncertainty sits: the Swiss entity publishes no crypto-payment fee at all, and the general terms let the bank apply an exchange rate it deems appropriate, with weekend transactions settled provisionally and corrected later. Holding the crypto is not free either — custody is billed quarterly — and withdrawing it costs USD 10 or USD 15 depending on the chain.

The other flaws

  • Holding crypto here costs money: custody fees are charged quarterly, which no prepaid crypto card does
  • The free tier is virtual only. Plastic means Bright at CHF 6.90 a month after six free months, and card replacement is CHF 5 on Bright or CHF 50 on Elite
  • The free tier's caps are low for daily banking: CHF 10,000 a month of card spend and CHF 5,000 a month at cash machines
  • The entry tier charges 0.95% to convert into any of the thirteen supported currencies, so "free card" does not mean free multi-currency
  • Moving crypto back out costs USD 10 per withdrawal on native chains and USD 15 for Ethereum-network tokens
  • Fifteen countries only, and the bank's own pages disagree about whether Greece is one of them
  • A sister product from Swissquote Bank Europe in Luxembourg shares the name and has a different fee schedule — including a published crypto-payment fee table that Switzerland does not publish at all
  • Full bank onboarding: identity documents, address and source-of-wealth questions, not an app signup
