Western Union StablecardWestern Union Stablecard
VisaVirtual and plasticSince 2026Western Union's own card: a Visa issued by Rain against USDPT, a dollar token Anchorage issues on Solana, with the fullest published fee disclosure of any card in this segment — and the narrowest funding path, because USDPT is the only thing it holds.
The issuer does not publish enough of its charges for us to price this card. That is not the same as cheap.
Whether to take Western Union Stablecard
Worth it if you want a stablecoin card from a counterparty you can look up and sue, with every fee printed: this is the most completely disclosed fee schedule in the segment, and the issuer, the token issuer and the licences are all named and regulated. Not worth it if you hold anything other than USDPT, need a single purchase over $1,000, or live in one of the seventeen excluded countries — and note that it is a secured credit card whose collateral can be liquidated if the token loses its peg, which is a risk no prepaid card carries.
In its favour
- The fee schedule is a proper disclosure table with every line priced, which almost nothing else in this segment publishes at that standard
- Virtual issuance is free and the plastic is $12, both stated as numbers rather than as "from"
- Currency conversion is a flat published 1%, not a range and not a discretionary spread
- The stack is named and each part is regulated: Rain as issuer and program manager, Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. as the issuer of the USDPT token, and Western Union's own money-transfer entities with their NMLS numbers
Against it
- It is a secured CREDIT card, not a prepaid one — your USDPT is pledged as collateral that the issuer may sell, and a liquidation event can be triggered by the token losing its peg even if you have paid everything on time
- One asset only. The card holds USDPT, Western Union's own token, and nothing else — no USDC, no USDT, no BTC. You have to acquire it first
- Seventeen countries are excluded by residence, and US citizens are barred from the international card by an attestation that tests citizenship rather than residence — a US citizen living in a covered market cannot take it
- The 37 markets it claims are counted but never named, on any Western Union or Rain page
Also true, in its favour
- Real ATM access with published per-withdrawal and per-day caps, which is rare on a stablecoin card
- Both a virtual and a physical card, with Apple Pay and Google Pay
- The brand is the point: a listed US company with a 175-year history standing behind a stablecoin card, and a shipped app updated four days before this check

A complete disclosure table, which is why the gaps in it stand out. Virtual issuance is free; plastic is $12, waived for the first 150,000 cards if you make two purchases over $30 in the first 30 days — a promotion, not a price. Foreign transactions cost a flat 1%, sitting on top of Visa's own conversion, which Western Union says openly may differ from the rate you expect. ATM withdrawal is $2 plus 2% plus the operator's surcharge, with a $0.60 balance enquiry, capped at $250 per withdrawal and three withdrawals a day. Spending is capped at $1,000 per transaction and $5,000 a day, and those limits are explicitly dynamic and changeable without notice. No per-purchase percentage, no flat per-purchase fee and no top-up price is published, and the annual fee line is left blank in the international terms. Rewards are stated as not applicable.
KYC: what Western Union Stablecard asks for
A government document. Passport or ID goes to the issuer and to whoever processes verification for it, before the card is handed over.
Limits on spending
Not published by the issuer: monthly spend, maximum balance.
Confirmed on westernunion.com on September 12, 2026. A figure told to one person in a chat window is not a published limit, so it does not appear here.

The other flaws
- $1,000 per transaction and $5,000 a day rules out a laptop, most flights and most rent payments in one swipe
- ATM cash is small and expensive: $2 plus 2% plus the machine's own charge, capped at $250 a withdrawal and three a day, and the $50 cap on liability for unauthorised use explicitly does not cover ATM withdrawals
- Zero rewards — the schedule says "Loyalty/Rewards | N/A" — on a product whose own page title says "Spend, Send & Earn"
- Nothing is insured: USDPT is not covered by the FDIC or any US government agency, and Western Union states it is merely "a service provider to Issuer"
- Spending limits are dynamic and can be cut at any time with or without notice, and the terms may be amended the same way
- The card terms define the supported blockchains as Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism and Arbitrum — none of which is Solana, the only chain the collateral actually exists on
- Western Union's own stablecoin page still lists the card under "what is coming soon", five weeks after it shipped
- Buying crypto with the card is treated as a cash-like transaction and restricted
- Binding arbitration with a class-action waiver, and the US variant is governed by Puerto Rico law
- The evidence base is ten App Store ratings
